What can be done to redress gender discrimination? Poverty and Inequality By Alexander Xia Introduction: ‘Gender discrimination’ is prejudice or discrimination based on sex; especially: discrimination against women (Merriam-Webster, 2014). Women are essential to the survival of the human race, yet they have faced centuries of discrimination and they have generally been viewed as the â€Å"weaker sex†. Only in 1964 did America rule discrimination in employment based on gender illegal. Even in the 21st century, women are still being treated differently whether it is in the workplace or at home, and this is unacceptable. Even though women make up half of the world’s population, incredibly, they represent 70% of the world’s poor. . Women make up 70% of the working hours worldwide; however, they only earn 10% of the world’s income. Despite society changing in the past 50 years to be more accepting of women’s rights, many cultures still hold men in higher regard than women. In industries such as the media or music industries, women are often obj ectified and exploited. In order for society to progress further, drastic changes are still needed. Even though the majority of instances of gender inequality affect women, males also face discrimination in certain situations.
